The Harp: versatile & powerful
Anne is Principal Harp with the BBC Concert Orchestra and also served as Official Harpist to HRH The Prince of Wales (now HM The King) from 2015-2019. She has appeared as a soloist at festivals and series across the U.K. and the world, and has performed concertos with the London Mozart Players and the London Chamber Orchestra.
As a young harpist, Anne caught the contemporary music ‘bug’ whilst still at school, relishing the challenge and satisfaction of learning totally new works and seeing the harp pushed beyond accepted technical and sonic limitations. Since then, she has been on a crusade to promote the versatility and power of the harp and the expedition continues – the harp is a literal sound machine that reveals new opportunities and possibilities every day.
Alongside a busy orchestral schedule, Anne is a sought-after chamber musician. She is a founding-member of award-winning contemporary experimental quartet The Hermes Experiment and has performed with chamber groups across the U.K., including Ensemble Cymru, Pelléas Ensemble and the Riot Ensemble. She also collaborates with flautist Alena Walentin as part of the Walentin-Denholm duo and with poet Chris Tutton, creating performances of poetry and semi-improvised music.
Anne has always enjoyed working in education and has held several school teaching positions in addition to thoroughly enjoying working with the National Children’s and Youth Orchestras of Great Britain. Currently, she has the opportunity to share her zest for contemporary harp playing with undergraduate and postgraduate students through her appointment as Contemporary Harp Tutor at the Royal Academy of Music.
Anne studied at the Purcell School, Newnham College Cambridge University and the Royal Academy of Music in London. She received her Master’s with distinction, studying under Karen Vaughan, and in 2020 she was elected an Associate of the RAM (ARAM).
